Adaptation
by Julio Salvatierra of the novel by Mia Couto Directed by Miguel Seabra and Alvaro Lavín Production concept and lighting design Teatro Meridional Photography and video Pedro Sena Nunes Graphic realisation João Nuno Represas Co-production Teatro Nacional S. João, Teatro Meridional for PoNTI Approximate length: 1 hr and 30 mins (no interval) After the confrontation with the "magic realism" of Italo Calvino in Ofwfq-Uma História do Universo (Ofwfq-A History of the Universe) - Teatro Meridional is now preparing for the meeting with the "animist realism" of Mia Couto, the most daring re-inventor of the Portuguese language by adapting A Varanda do Frangipani (1996). In what will be one of the world premieres at PoNTI, A Varanda do Frangipani receives a theatrical transposition that has a "Meridional reading" of the work as its point of departure. In other words, profound and universal. Once again, the primacy of communication.
"The intention is to create, based
on this literary world, a new universe on stage which manages to carry over to the
audience a little of the magic, the dream and the desire of progress - in the best sense -
that the reading of this novel caused in us." |
