Despite obvious differences, the languages of the theatre and television want to meet. They have to meet in this era of the primacy of the audio-visual. Between 1957 and 1999, Manuel de Oliveira e Costa embodied, as few others have done, the search for this language of synthesis in Portuguese television. As this has also been a recurrent interest of TNSJ, it was inevitable that our paths would cross. This was the case with Noite de Reis (Twelfth Night), a work which occupied Oliveira e Costa up until the time of his death and that will be premiered in the inaugural session of this cycle (18th December at 3pm).

"Apparently, theatre and television are separated by everything: space, light, the way in which the voice is transmitted or how a feeling is expressed (something superb on stage quickly becomes over-emphatic and false on the television screen) the relationship between word and image. The quality of the emotion is the real difference. In the theatre, it is lived directly and shared with others. On the small screen, it is received after a time lapse, in solitude, in an intimate space."
